Pogs became a fad back in the early 1990s when a elementary school teacher in Hawaii introduced the game to her students as a means of teaching them Math. By 1993, the game had grown and spread into mainland USA. By the mid 90s, Pogs had soared in popularity, reaching school playgrounds in Europe.
Pogs
Pogs were made out of stiff cardboard. As the picture shows, they were often covered by illustrations and other colorful graphics.
Slammers
Slammers were heavier and usually made out of heavy plastic or metal. These were used to hit the pogs.
If you remember correctly, Pogman was a major star of the World Tour pogs, which showed him doing various activities throughout the world (and even the moon):
